Selenium Toning

  • Wear gloves
  • Use tongs
  • Use platsic trays
  • Clean trays, tongs, bottles and sink especially thoroughly
  • Avoid skin and clothing contact. Wash exposed surfaces immediately and very throroughly
  • Work only in cross-ventilated area

Prints must be fully fixed and thoroughly washed before toning. If working with dry prints, soak them in water at 68 to 70 F for at least 15 minutes before toning.

Prepare selenium toner from concentrate, if stock is not aleready available. Prepare a 10% v/v solution from concentrate (dilute 1 part concentrate : 9 parts water) at 68 to 70 F. Store in a labelled and dated plastic bottle when not in use. 1 liter of stock solution is good for about 200 8×10 inch prints or six months.

Prepare a 2.5% w/v sodium sulfite solution. This is good for the entire work session. Discard at the end of the session or 2 hours.

  1. Immerse prints in sodium sulfite solution for 3 to 5 minutes, 68F, constant, gentle agitation and while cycling the stack.
  2. Wash in gentle running water, 68F, for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Immerse one print at a time in selenium toner, 68F, constant gentle agitation. Inspect against a reference (untoned but wet) print every 15 seconds or so. Tone between 45 seconds and 5 minutes, as desired.
  4. Rinse the print in gentle running water for two minutes, repeat step 3 if needed.
  5. Wash for 30 minutes, 68F.
  6. Dry
  7. Clean up!
